Walmart Announces New Animal Welfare Policy

The opinion piece below is written by a conservative evangelical Christian, but should be of broad interest. The writer is right in saying that this move by Walmart is likely to do a lot to take animal welfare concerns into the mainstream. Another point worth considering: it’s one thing to have a policy, but another to implement and enforce it. However, Walmart is highly efficient in this regard, and has a reputation for being able to convince suppliers — even very powerful ones — to do its bidding. >>>

Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club issued a surprise announcement today, good news for the growing number of consumers striving to eat more ethically. The country’s largest food retailer has boldly proclaimed that “farm animals in our supply chain should be treated humanely throughout their lives and that the welfare of farm animals should be considered in selection of all production systems, practices and technologies….”
